Open Wine Shelf Life

December 21, 2006

How long can you keep an open bottle of wine in the fridge before it starts getting weird?

Wednesday Night Garbage Truck

December 13, 2006

I live down the  street from a very tall very fancy apartment building. Several times a week this apartment building throws a gigantic pile of miscellaneous trash a few doors down so its right across from my window. Then a secret privatey private private garbage truck named Jem comes by around 1 AM to pick it up. I can hear it down the block let off a little puff of a steam and then await the most pleasant part of my week. This evening I was feeling crafty and whipped out my computer to record a clip. I am convinced that fancypants apartment must have soundproof walls, otherwise SOMEONE in there would be complaining about this. Luckily every single other person on the block gets to look forward to Wednesday night garbage truck. Lucky for everyone, I recorded a few seconds of Wednesday Night Garbage Truck so it can be experienced by all. Next week will include photo accompaniment. Click here to listen to a terrible sound recorded at 12:03 AM.

Goodnight!

Shows, Shows

December 12, 2006

Tune into BTR today – my new live show BTR Live Studio – on this week’s show I was lucky enough to have The Inner Banks. They’ve just released their self-titled debut album (a collaboration after several successful prior projects) and are very nice! I wrote about them on there a while back after hearing a song of theirs on 3hive.

In more personal show-related news. I’ll be performing at Arlene’s Grocery in NYC the day after Christmas.

Sunday Morning

December 10, 2006

I’m sitting here in the living room listening to the new joanna newsom album. i think its very good.

a friend of mine just told me it takes great pain to make a person switch over to the left side of their brain. how interesting, i had never really thought about that before.

I acquired a poinsettia last night. Is it true that the red parts are actually another type of leaf and not flowers at all?

poinsettia

Discovered a strange semi-historical cartoon this morning on network TV somewhere. It was all about benjamin franklin and seceeding from England and printing presses and ladies in pettycoats and a French stow-away.

It turns out that a boca burger is the last thing you should eat at 11 AM sunday morning.

The steam pipe is wailing in the bathroom. There are people streaming into the church down the street. It looks like a fine blue skied day out there.  I wish my guitar had all 6 strings on it. One of these days it will get what it needs.

I do not want to clean up my apartment.

This album is beautiful.

Pecaaaahn pie is so delicious, I hadn’t realized. My brother in law made 11 pies on Thanksgiving, and even though my nephew Max (a weimaraner) knocked one of these two pecan pies face down on the floor, we ate every bite of it.

Everything was delicious and company was good. Surprise surprise, Chicago was warmer than anticipated. Why is it so damn warm right now? I just checked the weather.com 10 day forecast for NYC and its still supposed to be close to 60 degrees. Oh well, at least it will be December in a week.

Went over to Jeremy’s apartment last night for cabernet and homemade gingerbread and listened to a lot of Thanksgiving Bjork. Saw John-A and even had a visit from his 10 month old kitten Ella. Woke up way too early this morning, read some McCullers from Jeremy’s living room, then drank a lukewarm coffee and tooled around the Salvation Army in Logan Square. Bought 5 mugs and a cassette tape. Helped Jeremy decide to buy a fine set of chairs for $25 and helped him carry one of them back to his apartment, using my “good hand”.

Took a break from Thanksgiving leftovers then ate some pie and then some more pie.

Had tapas in boystown with the family but even paella couldn’t wipe away pie pie pie.

Getting up at 4:45 AM tomorrow for an airport run and then back onto 80 for the trip back to the city. Looking forward to it. Downloaded another bunch of WNYC soundcheck podcasts for the car.

Made a wonderful to do list.

It’s been a short, sweet, refreshing trip to the midwest. New York is sounding very sweet though.

How can I convince Jeremy to move to the city next fall? So far my only plan is finding him a roommate and an apartment in….Astoria.

Route 80 Hey Hey

November 22, 2006

I am heading out to the greatland Chicago for Thanksgiving at my brother’s house.  Driving. From New York City, today, with my dad.

Packed some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and downloaded 1o hours of NPR podcasts.

So maybe this year I  won’t be hanging around New Jersey with my friends from high school,  and I won’t have so many days of free time, but I am actually looking forward to the drive and to a day with my immediate family.

I hope the traffic out of here/into there isn’t too terrible because there’s nothing like traffic on a cross country drive.

The other day I picked up Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice (and 7 other stories). I’ve already Death in Venice but felt like putting my reading cap on. Just started the story “Tristan”. Very good so far.

Just noticed a TV cable poking out of the wall near the radiator. It would be so magical if I plugged my television in and the cable worked. There is no way in hell. When Mr.Verizon (real name, Claudio) came to my apartment last summer to install the phone line and DSL, it took him many sweaty hours in between my place and the basement and he was shocked at how poorly wired the whole place was. I also don’t have a stove or a kitchen sink or cabinets or a kitchen so just imagine if there was cable.  I kind of hate TV anyway.
